The Saltwater Crocodile as a Window into the Past

Unlike all other present reptiles, crocodilians evolved out of the Archosaurs and are the evolutionary brothers of the dinosaurs. They both formed the epoch of the “ruling reptiles” for 180 million years, and therefore have already been the record holders, in terms of their position at the top of the food chain. Additionally, the later crocodiles even survived the mysterious end of the dinosaur age, 65 million years ago. It is almost impossible to imagine such creatures walked on earth as the strongest predators, at least very similar to the saltwater crocodile pictured here, when continents were widely different shaped and the Himalayas or the European Alps did not even exist yet.
